Warrnambool

Warrnambool is a city with about 34,000 inhabitants in the Australian state of Victoria. It is the capital of the local government area City of Warrnambool.

The largest city in the west of Victoria was founded in 1840 as a whale and seal hunters settlement. Due to the natural harbor she was well suited for a permanent settlement. The name comes from the language of the aborigines and was the name of a nearby volcano. 1849 a post office was opened. During the Victorian gold rush of the 1850s, the city experienced a boom and the population grew sharply.

Economically Warrnambool lives from agriculture and tourism. The town is the starting point for trips along the coastal road of the Great Ocean Road towards the east and west to Port Fairy and Portland. The city is located at the western end of the famous part of the Great Ocean Road.

The main attraction is the Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum & Village, a nachgebauter port Victorian with buildings and ships of that era. In the adjacent Surf Bay Südkapern ( Southern Right Whales ), a right whale species can be observed at calving.
