Wartburg 311

Wartburg 311 1960

The Wartburg 311 was an automobile of the car plant Eisenach, which was produced from 1955 to 1965. After the increase in capacity in 1962 the name Wartburg was added in 1000. Externally, little changed, the vehicle was further produced in a further developed version as Wartburg 312-1967. As a sporty variants of the Wartburg 313 and Wartburg 312-300 were derived. With its elegant, contemporary body, appropriately design and variety of Wartburg reached 311 as much international recognition like no other car in the GDR. It sold well in the non-socialist economic region and was therefore for the procurement of foreign currency in the GDR of great value. As shortcoming was his two-stroke engine, which had fallen due to the uncultured idling and visible plume already in his time into disrepute. The obsolete, maintenance -intensive chassis has been replaced by a new development in type 312. From the Wartburg 311 total 247 368 vehicles were produced.

History of development

The Wartburg produced from the end of 1955 311 was developed from the EMW 309 (the former IFA F9), the Auto Union was based on the 1940 model resulting DKW F9. The frame of the car was forcibly taken from Zwickau extended by ten centimeters and got a much larger and four-door body. As a trading name you chose the name of the first motor car in 1898 produced the Eisenach vehicle works. The term 311 is like the following (313, 312, 353, and prototypes) in BMW tradition - all BMWs and EMWs produced in Eisenach had three -digit numbers, all of which with a "3" began; F9 was performed in Eisenach as " 309 ". The Wartburg 311 was produced in various body styles with relative ease because of its frame design. On the other hand, were considered non- self-supporting bodies at the time as no longer appropriate.

Facelift

The main technical changes during the construction period were the 1958 synchronized transmission; and strengthened in 1961 to 40 hp engine, the 1962 cm ³ to 992 pre-drilled unit followed the now made 45 hp. The vehicles have since been often offered as Wartburg in 1000. The type 313 was placed on a 50 hp 0.9 - liter engine. As a visual change in all types of 1959 modified radiator grille that stands out, was similar to that of Type 313. At the same time the brakes have been improved .. At the Leipzig Autumn Fair 1958 was shown to have a lavishly designed bumper of the Wartburg, which was not included in the series .. There were studies on the use of fuel injection on the motor of the Wartburg 311 with a positive result instead in the series, however, remained the gasifier engine.
