Washington and Lee University

The Washington and Lee University is a private university located in Lexington, Virginia, United States. The University was founded in 1749 and is now named after George Washington and Robert Edward Lee.

History

1749 University of Irish and Scottish settlers as Augusta Academy was established 30 km north of present-day Lexington. In 1776 it was renamed by the emergence of patriotism during the American Revolution in Liberty Hall. Four years later it moved to Lexington to, the name was changed to Liberty Hall Academy and Training Institute was commissioned by the Virginia General Assembly for permission to award academic degrees. When in 1796 George Washington, the Academy gave her a donation of U.S. $ 20,000, the name was changed to Washington Academy. In 1813, the institute and its current location in Lexington and has been renamed Washington College. In 1865, Robert Edward Lee President of the College and merged this with the Lexington Law School, founded in 1849. After his death, in 1870, the College was again renamed, on its current name. In 1906 the School of Commerce and in 1925 the School of Journalism founded, the first of its kind at a college. Originally a men's college, the first women were admitted in 1972 for a law degree and 1985 for other courses.

The university is organized into three divisions:

  • The College as a liberal arts college for all students in the first year and higher terms in the fields of arts, social sciences and natural sciences
  • Williams School of Commerce, Economics and Politics for students of Economics and Political Science
  • The School of Law which allows a law degree
