Washington County (Arkansas)

The Washington County is a county located in the U.S. state of Arkansas. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Fayetteville.

History

The Washington County was formed on October 17, 1828 from parts of Crawford County. It was named after President George Washington. The district capital first was also called Washington, but after there was also a town by the name Washington in Hempstead County, is named for the city in Fayetteville. On November 28, 1862 it hosted the Battle of Cane Hill and on 7 December the same year the Battle of Prairie Grove between the Union and the Confederate troops instead.
