Washington County (Arkansas)

The Washington County is a county located in the U.S. state of Arkansas. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Fayetteville.

The Washington County is part of the metropolitan area Fayetteville - Springdale - Rogers, Arkansas and Missouri.

Geography

The County is located almost in the extreme northwest of Arkansas, on the west by Oklahoma, and has an area of 2476 square kilometers, of which 16 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered by the following counties:

History

The Washington County was formed on October 17, 1828 from parts of Crawford County. It was named after President George Washington. The district capital first was also called Washington, but after there was also a town by the name Washington in Hempstead County, is named for the city in Fayetteville. On November 28, 1862 it hosted the Battle of Cane Hill and on 7 December the same year the Battle of Prairie Grove between the Union and the Confederate troops instead.

According to the census of 2000, there were 157 715 people in Washington County. Of these, 6,060 people lived in collective centers, the other inhabitants living in 60 151 households, and 39,459 families. The population density was 64 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 88.00 percent White, 2.24 percent African American, 1.25 percent Native American, 1.54 percent Asian, 0.53 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 4.26 percent from other races groups; 2.17 percent are descended from two or more races. Regardless of ethnicity were 8.20 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 60 151 households out of which 32.5 per cent of children or young people under the age of 18 who lived with them. 52.3 percent were married couples living together, 9.4 percent were single mothers, 34.4 percent were non-families. 25.8 percent of all households were single-person households and 7.1 percent had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.52 and the average family size is 3.07 people.

25.0 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 15.3 percent between 18 to 24, 30.2 percent between 25 and 44, 19.5 percent between 45 and 64 and 9.9 percent were 65 years or older. The average age was 31 years. For every 100 females there were 100.4 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were an average of 98.7 males.

The median income for a household was $ 34,691, and the median income for a family $ 42,795. Males have a median income of $ 29,428, women $ 21,769. The per capita income was $ 17,347. 9.4 percent of families and 14.6 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
