Washington County (Indiana)
Washington County is a county located in the U.S. state of Indiana in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Salem.
Geography
The County is located in southern Indiana, is located in the southeast about 35 miles from Kentucky and has an area of 1338 square kilometers, of which five square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Jackson County, Scott County, Clark County, Floyd County, Harrison County, Crawford County, Orange County and Lawrence County.
History
Washington County was formed on December 21, 1813 from parts of Clark County, Harrison County and Jefferson County. It was named after George Washington, the commander of the Continental Army in the American Revolutionary War and later the first U.S. president.

According to an estimate in 2006, there were 28,062 people in 10,264 households and 7,585 families. The population density was 20 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 98.75 percent White, 0.13 percent African American, 0.13 percent Native American, 0.16 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander, and 0.24 percent from other races groups; 0.58 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.73 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 10,264 households out of which 35.0 percent of children under the age of 18 living with them in the household. 60.2 percent were married couples living together, 9.2 percent were single mothers and 26.1 percent were non-families. 22.2 percent of all households and 9.0 percent living alone who is 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.62 and the average family size was 3.05.
26.5 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 8.7 percent between 18 and 24, 29.7 percent between 25 and 44 years. 23.0 percent between 45 and 64 and 12.0 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 100.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, 97.2 males.
The median income for a household was $ 36,630, and the median income for a family $ 42,618. Males had a median income of $ 29,929, women $ 21,944. The per capita income was $ 16,748. 7.3 percent of families and 10.6 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
