Washington County (Minnesota)
The Washington County is a county located in the U.S. state of Minnesota. In 2010, the County had 238 136 inhabitants and a population density of 234.6 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Stillwater.
The Washington County is part of the metropolitan area of Minneapolis -Saint Paul.
Geography
The County is located in southeastern Minnesota and is separated from the neighboring state of Wisconsin on the east by the St. Croix River to its confluence with the Mississippi. It has an area of 1096 square kilometers, of which 81 square kilometers are water surface. At the Washington County borders the following Nachbarcountys:
History
The Washington County was formed on October 27, 1849 from parts of the only still existing in Wisconsin St. Croix County. It was named after George Washington (1732-1799), the commander of the Continental Army in the War of Independence ( 1775-1783 ) and first President of the United States ( 1789-1797 ).
