Washington County (Rhode Island)

Washington County is a county located in the state of Rhode Iceland to the United States. In the census in 2010, the County had 126 979 inhabitants and a population density of 147 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is West Kingston.

Geography

The county has an area of 1458 square kilometers, of which 596 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered to the north by Kent County and on the west by New London County.

History

Washington County was formed in 1729 as Kings County from parts of Providence County and renamed in 1781 to Washington County. Washington County is also known as South County.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Washington County 123 546 inhabitants in 46,907 households and 32,037 families. The population was made up of 94.82 percent White, 0.92 percent African American and 1.50 percent Asian. 1.44 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. The per capita income was 25,530 dollars; 4.2 percent of families and 7.3 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
