The metropolitan region of Washington ( engl. Washington Metropolitan Area or National Capital Region) is the seventh largest metropolitan area in the United States.

It not only covers Washington, D.C. some counties in the bordering states of Virginia, Maryland and West Virginia. In 2010 there were about 5.6 million inhabitants in the area. The metropolitan area is part of the Combined Region Washington -Baltimore -Northern Virginia.

Economy

The economy of the region is characterized by its proximity to the political center of the United States. Many companies whose business relies on government contracts (eg armaments industry) here have their headquarters. Another economic factor is the services sector, while manufacturing and agriculture play a subordinate role.
