WASP-12

WASP -12 is a star of spectral type G0 in the constellation Auriga. He is surrounded by an exoplanet called WASP -12 b.

Exoplanet

WASP -12 b is an exoplanet with a mass of about 1.4 Jupiter masses and is considered one of the hot Jupiters. It orbits the central star with a period of 1.1 days at a distance of about 0.0207 astronomical units at an eccentricity of about 0.05. WASP -12 b was discovered as part of the SuperWASP project using the transit method. His discovery was published in 2008.

2010 Hubble observed that WASP -12b is consumed by its parent star. Observational research group estimates that the planet will be swallowed up in about 10 million years ago.

The Spitzer Space Telescope confirmed the observations of some land-based telescopes a high concentration of carbon on the planet. Thus, WASP - 12b, the first discovered carbon-rich world. The core of the planet could be made of graphite or even diamond. In its atmosphere water vapor was detected.
