Wasps (Original Title: Wasp ) is a British short film from 2003 by Andrea Arnold. It is about a young single mother whose behavior puts their children at risk. The main role is played by Natalie Press. The film won an Oscar in 2005.

Action

With a baby in her arms and three young daughters, the 23 -year-old Zoë one day leaves her apartment. Barefoot and in her nightgown she starts a fight with a neighbor. Because, as Zoë calls, no one beat their children and came away with it.

On the way home after a long time Zoë meets her ex-boyfriend Dave again. He wants to make an appointment with her and she can not resist the prospect of a brief escape from their everyday life as a single mother. Zoë claims only watch for a friend to the children and makes a meeting at the pub with him.

Once home, Zoë tried by phone to find a babysitter for the evening, but fails. She has hardly any money and no food for the children except some sugar, which they share among themselves. Zoë opens the window and lets a wasp that has strayed into the apartment beyond fly.

Decked out to Zoë meets a little later with Dave in the pub while the kids have to wait outside. She exhorts her eldest daughter Kelly to report only in an extreme emergency with her. Hours pass, where Zoë happens only once before the door, to bring their daughters a glass of cola and chips and using them to sing a song. Since Dave they can pay the first round of drinks, she now has no more money. He makes her compliments, however, and they get along well.

While Zoë and Dave play billiards at the pub, it is dark outside. The children begin to get bored and get hungry. Kelly calls her mother, who, however, dismisses the children to leave with Dave the Pub can, without being noticed. As a passing man a bag of spare ribs from falling, Kelly accesses, so she and her siblings have something to eat.

While Zoë with Dave in the car exchanged caresses, she hears one of her children screaming. Frightened, she runs to them and sees that the baby is just a wasp crawling into his mouth. The dangerous situation is however good, the wasp flies away. Zoë Kelly cries because of the leftovers on the baby's mouth, but then she apologized and hugged their children.

The film ends with a scene in Dave's car. The kids eating fish and chips and Dave says he and Zoë would probably have something to talk about. The car drives off and the children sing Hey! Baby.

Background

Wasp is the third short film by director Andrea Arnold. He was shot in Arnold's hometown of Dartford. Part of the study was financed by Screen South, a regional representative of the UK Film Council. The British company Cowboy Films produced the film, supported by Film Four. Actress Natalie Press is best known for her performance in wasps first time to a wider audience and had a year later with My Summer of Love her breakthrough.

Reception

Film critic Roger Ebert called the film wasps as a " heartbreaking and erzürnendes 23 -minute drama " that meet a clear statement: this woman (the main character ) should rather be a mother and do not have to live like these children.

Kate Stables of The Guardian compared wasps in their criticism with "social- realistic film poetry ", which you should have seen. The main character Zoë judged them to be " flighty, but big -hearted ".

Awards

Wasps won the 2005 Oscar for Best Short Film and more than 30 international film awards. These include the nominate for Best Short Film at the Stockholm International Film Festival 2003 and the Short Filmmaking Award at the Sundance Film Festival 2005.
