Water polo at the 1904 Summer Olympics

In the III. Olympics 1904 in St. Louis, a competition was held in water polo. There were three American teams with seven players each. Some uncertainty about whether the water polo tournament was an Olympic competition. This is suggested that the tournament for amateurs was advertised and that foreigners were allowed to participate if they had belonged to the same club. However, they renounced also because the American water polo game at that time was more of a volleyball and differed from the European rules.

Venue for the water polo tournament of the Lifesaving Lake Exhibition at the Exhibition of the Louisiana Purchase Exposition was held. It was an artificial lake in which usually the United States Coast Guard, the U.S. Coast Guard, exercises lifesaving vorführte.

The lake was traversed by a brook and was heavily polluted by fertilizer residues and cattle dung of the adjacent agricultural exhibition, which is why numerous water polo athletes suffering during and after the competitions. Particularly affected were the water polo player for the longest time were staying in the water: Four of them died within a few months at one caused by Escherichia bacteria typhoid fever.
