Water polo at the 1908 Summer Olympics
In the IV Olympic Games in London in 1908, a competition was held in water polo. All matches were played in the swimming pool of the White City Stadium. It was attended by four teams of seven players.
The matches of the preliminary round were drawn prior to the final registration of the individual teams. However, shortly before the start of the tournament attracted teams from Hungary and Austria withdrew their notification, as the Austrian Government was reluctant to allow teams from both halves of the empire at the start. In this way, the Swedes and the British came on a round without a fight. In the single round match Belgium beat the Netherlands clearly with 8:1.
Through the two absences, it was found that the semi-finals, only three teams were represented. Hosts Great Britain came directly before the final, without having previously completed a game. In the match for the second -place finish, Belgium sat against Sweden 8:4 by. The rested British were able to use their advantage in the final and defeated the Belgians 9:2.
