Water polo at the 1968 Summer Olympics
In the XIX. Summer Olympics 1968 in Mexico City took place a water polo tournament. Venues were the swimming pool of the Ciudad Universitaria and the swimming pool Alberca Francisco Márquez Olympic Village.
Tournament
Qualified for the Olympic tournament were the first six teams in the European championship 1966 ( Soviet Union, East Germany, Yugoslavia, Italy, Romania, Hungary). Three other European teams qualified for a tournament from 3 to 9 June 1968 in Milan ( Federal Republic of Germany, Netherlands, Spain ). Because of the refusal of Romania moved to Greece. Also qualifying were the top three teams in the Pan American Games 1967 ( USA, Brazil, Mexico ), where nachrückte for host Mexico Cuba. Also eligible for participation were Japan as the winner of the Asian Games in 1966 and the United Arab Republic as the winner of the Pan-African Games in 1965.
The first and second placed both preliminary groups were advancing to the semifinals, the third - and fourth-placed play for places 5-8, the fifth-and sixth -placed for places 9 to 12, all the other places around the 13 to 15
