Water polo at the 1972 Summer Olympics

In the XX. 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich took place a water polo tournament. Venues were the Olympic Swimming Pool and the Dantebad.

Tournament

Qualified for the Olympic tournament were the first six teams in the European championship 1970 ( Soviet Union, Hungary, Yugoslavia, Italy, Netherlands, Romania), the first four teams in the Pan American Games 1971 ( USA, Cuba, Mexico, Canada ), the winner of the Asian Games 1970 (Japan ) and Australia. Since the last Olympic Gold Medalist Yugoslavia and the EM- Seventh Federal Republic of Germany were automatically eligible as host, Greece, Spain and Bulgaria also moved on.

There were three preliminary groups; the three medal winners from 1968 (Yugoslavia, Soviet Union, Hungary) were placed and received their opponent was lost. The top two teams in each group advanced in the final round for the places 1 to 6, the third and fourth teams finishing playing for places 7-12 (direct encounters the first round were counted).
