Water polo at the 1980 Summer Olympics

The XXII. 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow was held a competition in water polo. Venue was the swimming pool in the Olympic Park Luzhniki.

Tournament

Directly qualified for the Olympic tournament were the first six teams in the 1978 World Cup (Italy, Hungary, Yugoslavia, USSR, USA, Romania). For the host Soviet Union, the Federal Republic of Germany was declared the World Cup seventh. However, the Federal Republic and the United States waived because of the Olympic boycott on participation. The remaining grid positions were determined at a qualifying tournament that to 5 May 1980 at the place from April 28 in Sofia. In this case, Spain, Australia, Cuba, the Netherlands and Greece prevailed. For the sixth-placed Canada, which also joined the boycott, nominated the FINA Sweden to.

The two best teams in the three groups of four preliminary round then played in the final round for the places 1 to 6, the third and fourth teams finishing at the places 7 to 12
