Water polo at the 1988 Summer Olympics

The XXVII. Summer Olympic Games in Seoul in 1988 was held a competition in water polo. Venue was the Jamsil Swimming Hall.

Tournament

Directly qualified for the Olympic tournament were the Olympic champion from 1984 (Yugoslavia) and the host (South Korea), as well as the first five teams in the World Cup 1986 ( Italy, USSR, USA, Spain, West Germany ). Yugoslavia was also the reigning world champion, which is why the Germans nachrückten as WM- sixth. The remaining five grid positions were determined from 13 to 21 May 1988 with a tournament in Perth; thereby, Hungary, Australia, China, France and Greece prevailed.

The top two teams from both preliminary groups made ​​it to the semi-finals. The third and fourth binned teams played a round for places 5 to 8, the fifth and sixth teams finishing a round for places 9 to 12 ( direct encounters in the first round also included for the final result).
