Water polo at the 1992 Summer Olympics
The XXV. 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona took place in a competition in water polo. Venue was the Montjuïc swimming pool in the south of the Olympic Park on Montjuïc.
The top six teams in the 1991 World Series were directly qualified for the Olympic tournament (Yugoslavia, Spain, Hungary, USA, Italy, Germany ). Spain as a host was set, so the seventh -placed Soviet Union nachrückte (represented by the United team in the following year ). The remaining five places were awarded from the 2nd to May 10, 1992 at a qualifying tournament in Calgary; it qualified, Cuba, Australia, Greece, France and the Netherlands.
After the UN Security Council decided on 30 May 1992 in Yugoslavia due to the involvement in the Bosnian war sanctions, the Yugoslav champion team was expelled two days before the event starts by Czechoslovakia replaced ( sixth- place finisher in the qualifying tournament).
The top two teams from both preliminary groups made it to the semi-finals. The third and fourth binned teams played a round for places 5 to 8, the fifth and sixth teams finishing a round for places 9 to 12 ( direct encounters in the first round also included for the final result).
