Water Tower Place

The Water Tower Place is a 74 storey tall skyscraper in the American city of Chicago. The building houses both an eight-story shopping center with 70.400 m2, as well as offices and apartments. Both parts of the building are connected together to form the Water Tower Place. The complex is located on North Michigan Avenue and the Magnificent Mile. The name derives from the nearby Chicago Water Tower.

History

It was originally planned that the construction work for the Water Tower Place should begin as early as the late 1960s, but the construction company Mafco that has already been involved in the construction of Marshall Field, launched the construction work until 1975.

The skyscrapers of the complex is 262 meters high and has 74 floors, components were mostly reinforced concrete slabs. Currently, the tower of the Water Tower Place is the ninth tallest building in Chicago. When completed in 1976 it was the tallest built of reinforced concrete building in the world and lost his title in 1990 at the 293 -meter-high 311 South Wacker Drive, which is in Chicago also. The building maintains the award-winning Ritz- Carlton hotel, luxury condominiums and office space. The main entrance to the building is located on the west side just off the Magnificent Mile. In 2002, a large-scale renovation began on both buildings.

The opening of the Water Tower Place changed the economic dynamics of the Magnificent Mile, it was now the center of expensive retail and residential. Thirty years after the opening, the residences and apartments one of the most prestigious addresses in Chicago and the surrounding area and the mall is almost fully let to large and small corporations. Over a hundred shops are to be found throughout the building part. Represented are companies such as Adidas, Lacoste and Victoria 's Secret. The whole area comprises a one block, making it the second largest shopping center in Chicago. One of the most famous residents of the building is Oprah Winfrey.
