Waterford (Virginia)
Waterford is an unincorporated community in Loudoun County, Virginia, and is located at Cacoctin Creek. The village is located in the Loudoun Valley about 10 kilometers northwest of Leesburg and 75 km north- west of Washington, DC.
History
Waterford was founded in 1732 by Amos Janney, a Quaker from Pennsylvania. It was named after the Irish city of Waterford, where some of the city's founder once lived before they emigrated to the United States. In addition, the names of Janney 's Mill, Fairfax and Milltown are known, the latter said to have been used in the creation, before the village was renamed in Waterford.
Before the Civil War, Waterford was the second most populated community in Loudoun County Leesburg.
Waterford is a National Historic Landmark and is listed as a National Historical District on the National Register of Historic Places.
