Waterloo is a city with 9435 inhabitants ( 2006) and is the county seat ( county seat ) of the Monroe counties in Illinois, United States. It is located 32 km south-east of St. Louis, Missouri in the Metro - East called the eastern part of the metropolitan region of Greater St. Louis.

History

The story of Waterloo dates back to the 1780 's, when settlers established the first permanent settlement in the whole of the North West Territory. This settlement was given the French name Bell Fontaine according to the source, which served as a resting place for travelers between the French settlements of Cahokia and Kaskaskia. The settlement grew and in 1800 the population had grown to 286.

1816 reached a man named Emery Peters Rogers the area and opened four years later, a store, a mill and a quarry. The area of his shop was soon the name Peter Town.

In the course of two parts settlement, Bell Fontaine on the south side and Peterstown formed in the north of Creeks, in which developed an intense rivalry between the two parts.

According to legend, came in 1818 to an Irishman named Charles Carroll and to the amazement of all, he ignored this rivalry between Peterstown and Bellfontainer. Waterloo was founded as a city on February 12, 1849. The foundation charter was expanded in 1857 and 1859. On August 29, 1888 Waterloo became a town.

Waterloo was the county seat of Monroe County in 1825. On 1 December 1978, the historic center has been recognized as a monument and listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

The City of Waterloo is twinned with the East Westphalian city Porta Westfalica; annually is a " Porta Westfalica Festival" held in honor of this partnership.

Demography

In the United States Census 2000 7614 inhabitants were counted in 2912 households and 2076 families in Waterloo. The population density was 527.8 inhabitants / km ². The number of housing units was 3015, which corresponds to a density of 209 dwellings / km ².
