Waterloo is a city in Sierra Leone. It belongs to the West Province and is located 30 km south-southeast of Freetown on access to the peninsula of Freetown.

Population

The population is mixed. There are many Temne, Creole and Limba. 1963 were counted only 3,215 inhabitants, in 1974 there were 4276 and 1985 already 9,878. Today it is around 20,000 inhabitants.

History

The place was founded by freed slaves in the early 19th century. The city was fought fiercely in the Civil War. The end of 1998 it was the last outpost of the government soldiers and the ECOMOG troops outside the capital. It was completely destroyed and occupied by the rebels of the Revolutionary United Front end of the year.
