Watney Cup

The Watney Cup (full name: Watney Mann Invitation Cup) was a short-lived English football cup competition in the early 1970s. He was of Watney Mann, a brewery company, financial support and was one of the first tournaments in English football with such sponsorship background.

Between 1970 and 1973, in the English televised competition was launched shortly before the official start of the season of the Football League. Participation is open to two teams from the top four professional leagues of English football were ( First Division, Second Division, Third Division, Fourth Division ). Excluded were teams that had otherwise qualified for a European club competition, or had emerged as second-, third - or fourth division. From the remaining pool, the club qualified to the ports most goals in the preseason.

The eight participants played the winner from the simple knock-out system, where an encounter in only one game was decided and fell back in the draw event to decide on an extension and for the first time in English football on a penalty shootout. The finale did not take place on a neutral ground; has always had one of the finalists home advantage.
