Wauchula is a city and also the county seat of Hardee County in the U.S. state of Florida with 5,001 inhabitants ( 2010).

Geography

Wauchula is located on the Peace River and is located about 100 km southeast of Tampa.

History

Wauchula was until very recently an agricultural center. Leitgemüse was the cucumber ( en.: Cucumber ), so the city " Cucumber Capital of the World" ( world capital of cucumber) was called. More recently, citrus fruits have overtaken cucumbers.

In Wauchula Florida Institute for Neurologic Rehabilitation has its headquarters, are in the treated, among others, people with traumatic brain injury.

The Florida Southern Railway built a depot in 1886 in what is now the city (the building still stands today ), calling it Wauchula. The name derives from the Indian word Wa -tu- la -ha -kee ( Hitchiti - Mikasuki language) from .. Around the Depot soon arose a village which belonged to Manatee County. The city boundaries were defined in 1902, a time in Wauchula grew strong. In 1926 the old town hall was built.

1978 two babies were mixed up and given to the parents of the other child in Hardee Memorial. This story was later processed in a book and retold in a 1991 television movie.

Hurricane Charley hit Wauchula at about 5:30 am Friday, August 13, 2004 and caused a loss of more than 750 million dollars. Inter alia, the water supply is interrupted and destroy the power lines. The schools were forced to close for two weeks or more, 85 % of the houses were either destroyed or damaged.

Demographics

According to the 2010 census, the then 5,001 inhabitants distributed to 1,752 households. The population density was 642.4 inh. / Km ². 67.2 % of the population were white, 5.9% African American, 0.9% Native American and 1.0 % Asian Americans. 22.6% were members of other ethnic groups and 2.3% in different ethnic groups. 48.6 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino.

In 2010, children under the age of 18 and 23.4 % of all households lived in 44.8 % of all households with persons at least 65 years. 69.3 % of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or a parent with offspring ). The average size of a household was 3.15 persons and the average family size is 3.67 people.

34.0% of the population were younger than 20 years, 30.1% were 20-39 years old, 20.9% were 40-59 years old and 14.9 % were at least 60 years old. The median age was 29 years. 49.8 % of the population were male and 50.2 % female.

The average annual income was $ 44,917, while 22.9 % of the population lived below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the mother tongue of 64.38 % of the population spoke Spanish and 35.62 %.

Traffic

Through the city lead the U.S. Highway 17 and the Florida State Roads 35, 636 and 650 The city operates about 8 km southwest of the city airport ( Wauchula Municipal Airport ), which is open to the public.

Crime

The crime rate in 2010 was 470 points ( U.S. average: 266 points ) in the high range. There were three rapes, nine robberies, 21 injuries, 115 burglaries, 101 thefts, nine car thefts and one arson.
