Waukegan is a city and county seat of Lake County in the north east of the U.S. state of Illinois. In 2010 Waukegan had 89 078 inhabitants.

Waukegan is part of the Chicago metropolitan area.

Geography

The city is situated on the coast of Lake Michigan at 42 ° 42'21 " north latitude and 87 ° 51'41 " west longitude. The city covers 59.83 km ², spread over 59.57 km ² land and 0.26 km ² water surface.

History

Waukegan was founded in the late 17th century as an outpost of French traders. Waukegan was officially recognized as a city on February 23, 1859.

Demographic data

In the official census in 2000, a population of 87 901 was determined. These distributed to 27,787 households in 19,450 families. The population density was 1475.6 people per square kilometer.
