Wauwil is a municipality in the constituency Willisau the canton of Lucerne in Switzerland.

Geography

The place is on the road Sursee - Dagmersellen between the southern slopes of the mountain and the Sante Wauwilermoos, which was covered until 1859 by Wauwilersee. Apart from lying on Santenberg Kohlrütiwald north and the east of the village located Breitloo the community knows no forest areas (only 10.2% of the municipal area is wooded ). On the southern slope of Mount Sante are (from west to east) the settlements Engelberg ( 621 m asl) and Schoenbuehl / Berghof ( 659 m asl). Previously, the settlements Wauwilerberg (northeast ), Sonnhalden and star Matt / Obermoosburg were ( east ) independent hamlet - but they are grown together just like the neighboring Egolzwil the west with Wauwil village. There are also on Santenberg and Wauwilermoos some freestanding homesteads. The lowest point of the municipality is the falcon in Wauwilermoos to 498 m above sea level, the highest point in Kohlrütiwald to 686 m asl By draining the Wauwilersees and later the Wauwilermoos for peat cutting large agricultural areas were added. They cover 71.9 % of the municipal territory. Almost a fifth of the municipal area ( 18.0 %) is settlement area.

Wauwil borders Dagmersellen, Egolzwil, Ettiswil, Mauensee and Schötz.

Population

The population declined 1850-1860 ( 1850-1860: -13.6 %). This was followed by a rapid population growth to the year 1910 (1860-1910: 51.3 % ) - very uncharacteristic of Lucerne rural communities. Reason for this unusual growth was the construction of the railway line Olten- Emmen bridge, the peat-cutters and the establishment of a glassworks. From 1920 the number of residents for half a century grew continuously ( 1920-1970: 118.2 %) to more than double the. In the 1980s there was a further sharp increase until the end of the 1990s, the population stagnated, however. Since the year 2005, the population is increasing due to brisk inflows resumed steady.

Languages

The population used as everyday language, a high- Alemannic dialect. At the last census in 2000 gave 81.39 % German, 6.70% and 4.31% Albanian Serbian as the main language.

Religions - faiths

Previously, all the inhabitants were members of the Roman Catholic Church. By leaving the church and immigration from other regions in Switzerland and abroad, this has changed. Today ( as of 2000) provides for the religious composition of the population as follows. There are 67.92 % Roman Catholic, 9.81 % and 5.98% Orthodox Evangelical Protestant Christians. One is recommended 6.16 % Muslim, 3.35 % and 1.14 % non-religious members of other non-Christian religions. Both the Orthodox and the Muslims come from the former Yugoslavia ( Serbs, Montenegrins, Macedonians, Albanians and Bosniaks ). The members of other non-Christian faiths are Hindus of Tamil origin.

Origin - Nationality

Of the 1,611 inhabitants end of 2006, 1'122 Swiss and 489 ( = 30.4%) foreigners. This high proportion of foreigners is totally uncharacteristic for a rural community. At the last census was 65.89 % ( 67.86 % including dual citizens ) Swiss nationals. The largest immigrant groups come from Serbia and Montenegro ( 18.55% of the population; both Slavs as well as Albanians ), Italy, Macedonia, Sri Lanka, Germany, Croatia and Portugal.

Traffic

Wauwil is on the railway line Luzern- Olten and has its own train station. At the S -Bahn station in addition a regional express train (RE) per hour and direction keeps the S-Bahn No. S8. The train station is characterized by the close proximity to the village center as well as by a large number of free parking spaces.

Wauwil is on the road Sursee - Nebikon. The nearest motorway connections are Dagmersellen 7 km and Sursee 9 km away ( in about 10 minutes to reach travel time, respectively ). Both are located on the A2.

History

It is first mentioned Wawile in 1070, when the abbot of the monastery Einsiedeln Seliger, who came from the family of the lords of Wolhusen, his monastery bequeathed an estate to Wauwil. However, the community must have been settled much earlier as the whole area around the former Wauwilersee ( in the 6th millennium BC ). The community came in 1407 by purchase under the rule of the city of Lucerne, after they had previously heard the Habsburgs. The city acquired 1450-1515, the lower courts. Wauwil formed so until 1798 a part of the bailiwick Willisau. After that, she was the district Altishofen belong before they came to the newly established Office Willisau 1803. In 1853 the Wauwilersee was drained and it was so the Wauwilermoos.
