Wavelet transform#Wavelet compression
Wavelet compression is a form of data compression designed specifically for image compression (sometimes also video compression).
Principle
First, a 2D wavelet transform is performed. This gives as many coefficients as the image pixel contains. These coefficients are easier to compress, since most of the important information concentrated in a few coefficients. This principle is also called transform coding. Subsequently, the coefficients are quantized and entropy coded and / or run-length encoding the quantized values .
