Wau ( also WAW, واو ) is the 27th letter of the Arabic alphabet. It was derived from the Phoenician Waw and in the Latin F, V (and hence U and W) and Y related. His counterpart in the Greek alphabet is the digamma no longer used in the Hebrew alphabet and the waw. He is assigned the value 6.

Phonetic value and inscription

The Vav is one of the two semi- consonants of Arabic. Depending on the word it stands for a consonant or serves the Vokallängung.

  • As the consonant Vav the English " w" corresponds to sound in - white or water. It is reproduced in the DMG romanization with "w";
  • As a sign of the Vokallängung Vav represents the closed ( = "long") U as in " Usedom ", as elongation of the short u ( damma ). It is in the DMG romanization then as "u " with a line over it reproduced ( ū ).

Furthermore, Vav serve as a carrier for the vowel Hamza.

In the name عمرو Amr the Wau is dumb. The word صلوة salah (prayer ritual ), which can also be written صلاة, and a few other words, it is spoken as Alif.
