Wayne County (Iowa)

The Wayne County is a county located in the U.S. state of Iowa. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Corydon.

Geography

The County is located in the extreme south of Iowa, bordering Missouri and has an area of 1,365 square kilometers, of which four square kilometers of water surface. It borders the following Nachbarcountys:

History

The Wayne County was formed in 1846. It was named after Anthony Wayne (1745-1796), a general in the American Revolutionary War.

1851 own administration was established. Corydon, the first bore the name of Springfield, was established as the county seat. In order for the Wayne County is one of the few counties in Iowa who have never changed the County Seat.

A hastily built log cabin served as the first judicial and administrative buildings, until 1856 a new building was erected for it. 1871 this was too small and the administration of the county moved to different homes in Corydon. Not until 1891 that this condition could be terminated as a newly built brick building was purchased.

In 1962 it was decided to erect a new building, which was completed in 1964.

Demographic data

According to the census in 2010 lived in Wayne County 6,403 people in 2,742 households. The population density was 4.7 people per square kilometer.

The racial the population was composed of 98.0 percent white, 0.3 percent African American, 0.2 percent Native American, 0.3 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 0.7 percent were descended from two or more races. Regardless of ethnicity were 1.1 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

In the 2,742 households lived statistically 2.32 per person.

23.4 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 54.5 percent were between 18 and 64 and 22.1 percent were 65 years or older. 51.3 percent of the population was female.

The median income for a household was $ 35,425. The per capita income was $ 18,795. 12.7 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
