History

The Wayne County was one of the original counties, whose existence dates back to the founding of the North West Territory. Its name was chosen in honor of the U.S. General Anthony Wayne. Originally comprised the County the entire area of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan as well as some sections that are now part of northern Ohio, Indiana and Illinois. By locating the Territorial Secretary and Acting Governor Winthrop Sargent, the boundaries of the county were amended on August 15, 1796 to begin at the mouth of the Cuyahoga River, thence west to Fort Wayne, then to the southernmost point of Lake Michigan, then along the west bank to extend north to the territorial boundary in Lake Superior, and from there the territorial border along to the starting point in Lake Erie.
