Webster's Dictionary

Merriam- Webster 's Collegiate Dictionary ( shortening also Webster's Dictionary or ( Merriam ) Webster ) is an English-speaking countries (especially the U.S.) well-known and frequently used dictionary.

It contains an abridged version of Webster's New International Dictionary, is now, however, treated as a separate series. His good reputation attracted mainly from the long publishing history of Merriam- Webster, which has now been incorporated into the publisher of the Encyclopædia Britannica.

As of 1985, published 9th edition ( Webster's Ninth New Collegiate Dictionary ( WNNCD ) ), the practice changed to the extent that it clearly differed from the Third New International and no longer only an abridged version of this was. The most significant change was then the additional indication of the year in which each word occurred for the first time, as far as known.

A special feature is single out that the Webster do not use the widely used IPA phonetics to describe the pronunciation of the words, but our own use (in many deviant sounds ) pronunciation alphabet.

In Germany the Webster example, is used by students, also because the use of English -English dictionaries is allowed in exams in English for often.
