Weddell Island

Weddell Iceland (Spanish name Isla San José ) is 254 km ² is the third largest of the Falkland Islands. It is located in the southwest of the archipelago. Until the late 19th century, the island was ( German: Swan Island) under the name Swan Iceland known. Its present name dates back to the British whaler and explorer James Weddell. The population lives in the village of Weddell on the east coast and lives mainly on sheep farming.

Like most of the Falkland Islands is known for its unspoiled nature Weddell. Penguins, sea lions, dolphins and many sea birds are resident here. But since the 1930s Skunks, rheas, parrots, guanacos and Patagonian foxes have been introduced.
