Wee Kim Wee

Wee Kim Wee (黄金辉, Huang Jinhui; * November 4, 1915; † 2 May 2005) from 1985 to 1993, the fourth President of Singapore. He was the successor of Devan Nair, who had to resign after alleged alcoholism problems.

Career

Wee Kim Wee grew up the son of an employee in modest relationship, his father died when he was eight years old. Later he worked as an employee of the newspaper The Straits Times before he became a reporter and is mainly devoted to the political reporting. Ultimately, he became one of the most important reporter of the sheet. In 1941 he joined United Press, where he was in the 50's chief correspondent. In 1959 he returned to The Straits Times and was deputy editor.

Wee was editor in chief, when he retired in 1973 to become High Commissioner for seven years in Malaysia. He was appointed in September 1980 as ambassador to Japan, then in February 1981 as ambassador to South Korea. 1984, at the end of his diplomatic career, he was appointed Chairman of the Singapore Broadcasting Corporation, one year later he became president of the country. Wee Kim Wee was a popular and popular among the population president.

Wee was also active as an athlete and sports official. In 1934 he founded the Useful Badminton Party, 1937, he was national junior champion. He was president of the Singapore Badminton Association and Vice - President of the Badminton Association of Malaya.

Wee Kim Wee died in May 2005 from prostate cancer.
