Wehra

The Wehra in the gorge-like middle reaches

The Wehra is a river in south-west southern Black Forest in Baden -Württemberg and a right tributary of the Rhine.

Geographical location and topography

The Valley of Wehra is characterized by a striking three-division. The overflow is a typical high valley of the Black Forest, but with 200 to 300 meters depth significantly in relief as the east neighboring high valleys of the Hotze forest. Its center is the place Todtmoos that fills the largest valley widening of the Ice Age glaciers formed striking about the valley. In its middle reaches of the Wehra cuts up to more than 400 meters deep gorge in the southwest waste of the Black Forest. The steep wooded slopes are interspersed in some cases almost 100 meter high rock walls. The gradient large river forms a nationally known, extremely difficult whitewater course. The approximately seven kilometers long bottom section of the valley separating the barely articulated, steep, a good 500 meter west of waste Hotzenwald from strong karstic plateau of Spelt Hill, which rises to the west of Wehratales only about 100 meters. Main place of this wide valley is the small industrial town weir, which is, however, increasingly influenced touristy. When Brennet district opens the Wehra into the Rhine, already in sight of the city upriver lying Bad Säckingen.

Hydrography

The Wehra drains a narrow, elongated, approximately 115 km ² wide catchment area that allows only short, usually two to four kilometers long tributary streams with the exception of approximately 13 kilometers long Haselbaches. Flood hazard that bring the steep relief, in consequence of the high flow rates and the dense subsoil of the crystalline basement with it, is mitigated by the shape of the catchment something.

The Hauptquellast the Wehra is the Rüttebach, with the roll-call of the source river, also called Hohwehra here united in Todtmoos. He has nearly four times the water flow and with 4.3 km twice the length of Hohwehra. The Rüttebach forms above the valley basin of Hintertodtmoos a series of waterfalls, as well as many of the tributaries to the trough Talk formants of Wehratales gorges and waterfalls form.

The main source branches of the Wehra are:

  • Hohwehra ( until the unification with the Rüttebach 2.4 km ), rises to about 1080 m above sea level. NN below the elevation Black Stock ( 1,168 m above sea level. NN ) in the northeast of dead moss.
  • Rüttebach (4.3 miles), rises to about 1140 m above sea level. NN in northeastern Hintertodtmoos
  • Sägebach (3 km), empties into Todtmoos- Hoefle in the Rüttebach, rises to about 1100 m above sea level. NN west of Todt moss - way
  • Todt Bach (3.5 km), empties into Todtmoos in the Wehra, source at about 1130 m above sea level. NN west of Todt Moss fief

Other noteworthy tributaries are:

  • Rotmoosbach (4.4 miles), with extensive old white fir stands
  • Fire stream, in the upper reaches of Gersbach (4.2 miles), opens after a seven- meter-high waterfall in Gersbach -Au
  • Hazel (13 km), rises between meadow and Wehratal flows in the Erdmannshöhle with hazel (Baden) partially underground and in the urban area of military parallel to Wehra

At the mouth of the Rhine, the Wehra has a mean discharge of 3.71 m³ / s

Development

The lower reaches of the Wehratales is tapped by the Federal Road 518, which is coming crossed by the B 34 in the Wehramündung the ridge to the meadow and included in Schopfheim of the B 317.

The headwaters of the Wehratales with the Wehraschlucht is accessed through the provincial road 148, which leads coming from the B 518 in defense through the gorge until after Todtmoos where it discharges into the valley crossing L 151. From Todtmoos the L 150 carries on through the valley in which the "official" Wehraquelle lies above the heights of the mountain ridge into the Alb valley to St. Blaise.

The L 151 crosses the west by the Sägebachtal. Between Todtmoos and Hintertodtmoos leads from the outgoing L 151 L 146 continues through the Rüttebachtal.

Along the Wehratales lead the trails Schluchtensteig and Wehratal adventure trail. From Todtmoos to Todtmoos- Au crosses the Glasträgerweg.

Hydropower

At the end of Wehraschlucht, about 7.5 km upstream of the mouth, the Wehra reservoir is located at an altitude of about 420 m above sea level. NN. At a length of about 1.35 km here is the Wehra to Wasserkaftgewinnung in connection with the Hornberg stage ( Hornberg basin, about 1050 m above sea level. NN ) jammed.
