The high weight throw (English: weight over the bar or weight for height ) is a traditional Scottish sport. This discipline is an integral part of the Heavy Events at the Highland Games.

The weight must be propelled with one hand on a bar. The height of the bar determine the athletes individually. If the athlete unsuccessful after three attempts, he is eliminated from the competition. If more athletes fail at the same level, the one with the fewest failures.

According to regulations of the International Highland Games Federation ( IHGF ) throwing the men at the Heavy Events Highland Games with a weight of 25.4 kg ( 56 pounds) and the women with a weight of 12.7 kg ( 28 pounds). At other occasions also lighter weights are used (42 lb).

The spherical or rectangular throwing device made ​​of metal and has a handle ( triangular, round or D-shaped ). The height of the throwing device including handle shall be not more than 45.72 cm ( 18 inches ).

For throwing the athlete takes the weight with one hand and swings it between the legs to it then throwing upward momentum over the predetermined height. Two-handed swing is not allowed.
