Weitenhagen

Weitenhagen is a municipality in the north of the district of Vorpommern - Greifswald. It is administered by the Office Landhagen based in New churches. The community is located south of the town of Greifswald. Its proximity to the city of Greifswald and the scenic location, the population has more than doubled since 1990.

Geography and transport

Weitenhagen is located about six kilometers south of Greifswald. Through the village the main road passes 109 as a bypass of Greifswald. The state road 35 leads towards Jarman / Neubrandenburg. The Federal Highway 20 is on the junction Gützkow reached in about twelve kilometers.

History

The community of Weitenhagen was a district named Merthenshaghen, this was first mentioned in 1280. The district was owned by the city of Greifswald. In 1600 the place was desolate, he slammed the box Mark of the city. The name has its origin for the missing St. Martin's Chapel and the surrounding cleared forest ( Hagen).

Pott Hagen was first mentioned in 1736 as such or as " pot jug ". It's like all the villages around a village clearing Hagen- = as German foundation.

Weitenhagen was first mentioned in 1280 in a deed of the monastery Eldena under the names Woytenhagen and Woythenhagen. It then pass the names Weithenhaghen ( 1298 ), Weythenhaghen ( 1334 ) and wide Tenhagen ( 1626 ) on; from 1696 the name Weitenhagen is attested for the first time. The name probably derives from the family name Weithe or Woite.

Belonging wide Hagens to the basic property of the monastery in 1281 by Duke of Pomerania Bogislaw confirmed IV; 1288 was a further award of the village Weitenhagen to the monastery by the Counts of Gützkow. In 1626 Weitenhagen was passed after the secularization of the monastery at the University of Greifswald.
