Welf I, Duke of Bavaria

Welf IV (c. 1030/1040; † November 9, 1101 in Paphos in Cyprus ) from the House of Guelph was as Welf I Duke of Bavaria from 1070 to 1077 and from 1096 to 1101.

Life

Welf IV was a son of the Italian Marquis Alberto Azzo II d' Este (1009-1097) and Kunigunde of Carinthia, the sister of the Duke Welf III. of Carinthia († 31 March preceding 1055 ). This was Welf IV, though in the female line, the only heir of the Welf possessions in Swabia, Bavaria and Raetia. His grandmother Imiza ( † after 1055 ), the widow of Welf II († 1030), let bring him to Germany to take up the legacy that her childless son of Welf III. had been bequeathed to the monastery Altdorf.

He married Ethelinde of Northeim, daughter of Otto II of Northeim, Duke of Bavaria. His father was outlawed in 1070, after which Welf his wife - the marriage was also childless - violated. Christmas of the same year Welf was entrusted by King Henry IV with the successor of Otto of Bavaria. 1070/71 he entered into a second marriage with the widowed Judith of Flanders.
