Wellen, Rhineland-Palatinate

Waves is a municipality in the Trier -Saar castle in Rhineland- Palatinate. It belongs to the municipality Konz.

Geography

Waves lies in the west of the municipality Konz on the Moselle opposite the Luxembourg community Grevenmacher, with which it is connected by a bridge. The place is touched by the B 419 and is holding point of the configuration Trier- Apach ( Upper Moselle route).

History

In the year 646 waves should have been called for the first time with the Frankish word Vualeheim. The name changed later in valem, Welem and finally waves. Perhaps the name comes from waves from the personal name whale of a Frankish settler, who settled with his family at this place. After 1150 the town belonged to Luxembourg, and later to the Burgundian, the Spanish and the Austrian Netherlands.
