The Wellington airport (Wellington International Airport, IATA code: WLG, ICAO code: NZWN ) is the commercial airport in the New Zealand capital Wellington. It is located on Rongotai.

It will be handled mainly domestic flights. In addition, there are also international connections to airports in Australia and Fiji.

History

The airport was officially opened in October 1959. Previously, an airport was located north of the city at Paraparaumu. Was located at the site of the present airport, previously known as Rongotai Airport, a grass runway, which was officially put into operation in 1935 but closed down already in September 1947 because of safety concerns. After major renovations and fixings then a continuous flight operations on the then 1630 m long railway was added in 1959. Were used at the time primarily Fokker F.27 and Boeing 737-200. Since the early 1970s, Air New Zealand also wanted to offer flights with the DC-8 to Australia, the runway was extended to its current level.

When the terminal for regional flights was long considered overloaded, 1999, a new one was opened. To comply with ICAO safety standards, a 90 -meter-long safety zone was established at both ends of the runway.

The shortness of the runway, the number of destinations overseas always very limited. There is only a small number of connections to Australia and Asia. There was in the past, reflections on an extension of the track so that can land even larger long-haul aircraft. This would have led to expensive land reclamation. An international terminal was built in 1986 by Ansett NZ. He is to be extended between 2005 and 2007 to allow the handling of the Boeing 787. This long-range aircraft can land on short runways.

Since 1998, the airport is partially privatized. At 66 percent, it is owned by Infratil and the remaining 34 percent owned by the Wellington City Council.
