History

On April 1, 1835, the horse-drawn railway from Budweis was opened to Gmunden, perverted by catfish. It transported except people still salt from the Salzkammergut, which has been shipped or transported in Linz to Bohemia. The narrow gauge horse-drawn railway was in Wels directly through the city center ( Kaiser Josef Platz, Dragonerstraße ). From 1855 on, the horses of steam locomotives were replaced on this route and then ran between Gmunden and Linz. The northern branch of the horse-drawn railway was because of the track alignment is not suitable for the locomotives. 1859/1860 the standard gauge West train from Vienna to Salzburg was opened and thus obsolete the old route. The railway now ran north of Wels, the station building was moved to its current location and consisted of an elongated central section with Eckpavillions at both ends. The station was built in the style of Romanticism. At that time there were only four tracks traffic. When the Passau railway was planned, it was decided for the branching point of this branch of the Western Railway not in Linz, but for catfish. This decision made the Welser station to a major railway hub. Already in 1861 the railway was completed in Passau (initially single track ).

In 1886, the railway was built to Aschach of the Welser local railway company whose track to Haiding next to the lay of the Passau train. 1893 was built by the same company another branch line, this time to the south, the later Almtalbahn. She was passed over Sattledt and Kremsmuenster after pipe where the route met the then competing Pyhrnbahn. 1901 was built by Sattledt from a branch line to Grünau, the actual Almtalbahn. The original route by tube, even through bound on the trains from Wels to Bad Hall, had to be discontinued due to unprofitability in 1965.

Through the many traffic the station had to be enlarged. After the First World War, there were already plans for improvement. The German Reichsbahn led by the doubling of the Passau train, the fall was completed in 1938. The trains of the railway ran Aschacher continues from / to catfish and used now each main track mainline with. To the east of the main station of shunting was opened in Pärnu, the traction was moved there from the north-west of the main station.

1937, the station was rebuilt. During the Second World War, the station suffered heavy air attacks. After reconstruction in 1945, the building was given a new look. 1951, from the west, the electrification of the railway station together with all sidings. The island platforms with Underpass came in 1959 to do so. About the station there was an iron bridge that connected with the Neustadt district of Wels, in the same year it was replaced by an underpass ( Grieskirchner road).

1992, a new central interlocking catfish was built. Near the shunting which was opened " rolling road " in which trucks were transported by train between Wels and Mainz. Now run there trains from Wels to many European destinations.
