Welshpool

Welshpool (Welsh Y Trallwng ) is a city in the Welsh county of Powys; it lies in the valley of the River Severn and has since 1263 Market Law.

Welshpool is the center of a large rural region; since the 7th century, every Monday of the largest Welsh cattle market was held here. The proximity to the border of England is reflected in the Middle Ages in pro- English tendencies; the inhabitants were traditionally English speaking. Even the cityscape with a wide main street and many brick houses is not medieval but rather Georgian.

The Church of St. Mary dates back to the year 1240., Where the grave monuments of the Earl of Powys are seen. Founded in 1874 Powysland museum shows mainly Roman finds and local history objects. On the outskirts leads Offa 's Dyke over.

One opened in 1903 narrow-gauge railway line, the Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway ( W & LLR), Welshpool combined with the 14 km drive from Llanfair Caereinion village. The line was shut down in 1956; Since 1963, the steam train restored is operated on a nonprofit basis as a tourist attraction.

2.5 km south of the city lies on a rocky ridge Powis Castle. The Dating back to the 12th century castle was left to the National Trust in 1952.
