Wenzel Thomas Matiegka

Wenzel Matiegka (actually Václav Tomáš Matejka, also Wenzeslav or Wenzeslaus Matiegka, baptized July 6, 1773 in Choceň; † January 19, 1830 in Vienna) was a Bohemian composer and guitarist.

Life

Matiegka studied law in Prague and next to music with Abbé Josef Jelinek. Since 1800, he lived as a piano and guitar teacher in Vienna. In 1817 he was choirmaster at St. Leopold, 1821 at St. Joseph.

Matiegka composed masses and other sacred music. But he was known primarily for his thirty guitar pieces and a Nocturne for Flute, Viola and Guitar, the Franz Schubert fashioned to a quartet by adding a Cello and which was maintained for a long composition Schubert.

In the archives of the Society of Friends of Music in Vienna, a manuscript of William Klingenbrunner from 1826 has received, in which the works Matiegkas are listed.
