Wera Engels

Wera Engels, also Vera Engels ( born May 12, 1904 in Kiel, † November 16, 1988 in Denklingen) was a German actress.

Life

The daughter of a naval officer lived up to their enrollment in 1909 in the German colony of Tsingtao and in Japan. After that, she spent her childhood in Wiesbaden. In 1926 she received immediately a lead role in the film drama girl trafficking.

With the beginning of the sound film era she was able to expand her career crucial because of their excellent French and English. Through her marriage she was a British citizen since 1928. In 1932 she went to Hollywood, where she completed a contract with the film company RKO.

Their arrival was taken from the specialized press with interest, although some doubts remained whether Engels actually have the makings of a star. The well-known columnist Elizabeth Yeaman wrote on 29 November 1932, the actress:

Engels then worked with in some Hollywood productions, including 1934 in Dangerous border on the side of Erich von Stroheim, but it was only to B- movies. The hoped-for breakthrough did not succeed, and so she went back to Germany in 1935.

Here she acted again in two movies and then emigrated to America. In Hollywood, she married the Lithuanian actor Ivan Lebedeff. After his death in 1958 she returned to Germany. With a cameo appearance in the film comedy Almost a hero, she ended her film career.

Wera Engels urn was the end of December 1988, the Forest Lawn cemetery in Los Angeles in the grave of Mary Pickford (1892 - 1979) buried.
