Geography

Wern source

The Wern springs on the territory of the municipality Poppenhausen north of the local part Pfersdorf. The Wern source pours an average of about one to two liters per second, but dried up completely in the summer. Right after the source discharges, the 6.3 km long Augraben (including linseed or Leimgraben ) on the right side in the Wern. This originates north of Pfändhausen in the community Dittelbrunn and was expanded in the 1930s as a drainage ditch. He is regarded as the upper reaches of the Wern because of its higher water flow and greater length.

Course

The Wern first flows in a southerly direction and thereby approaches in Schweinfurt up to about 2 km at the Main. Then she turns to the west and flows through the northern part of the main triangle. Having approached near Karlstadt- Stetten turn up to about 2 km to the Main, it also changes here their direction and flows north. In Gemünden - Wernfeld the Wern finally ends at an altitude of 153 m above sea level. NN in the Main.

At the headwaters of the Wern has little slope. The earlier tortuous course of the river was straightened to Arnstein there in the 1930s through the Reich Labour Service in most laborious manual work in order to gain additional agricultural land. That they now try to undo reasons of nature protection and protection against flooding.

The Wern often results in very little water and the water quality is quite bad ( mostly grade II to III), but it has improved significantly in the 2010s after the construction of new sewage treatment plants and by the restoration measures.

In the Wern grayling, brown trout, stone loach, barbel, bream, minnow, gable, gudgeon, dace, rainbow trout, roach, eel, tench and chub occur.
