Werner Greuter

Werner Rodolfo Greuter ( born February 27, 1938 in Genoa ) is a Swiss botanist. His research focuses on the Mediterranean flora and the Caribbean. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Greuter ".

After schools in Bellinzona and Winterthur, he attended the University of Zurich, where he received his doctorate in 1972. Since 1965 he worked at the Botanical Garden of the city of Geneva, where he remained until 1978. From 1972 to 1974 he was Scientific Director at the Goulandris Museum of Natural History in Kifissia, 1975 he habilitated at the University of Geneva. From 1978 to 2008 ( of which since 2004 acting) was Greuter director of the Botanic Garden and Botanical Museum Berlin- Dahlem. At the Tokyo Code (1994 ) and the St. Louis Code (2000), he was chairman of the editorial committee of the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature ( ICBN ), which he had previously heard.

Many of his works revolved around the flora of Greek islands in particular the southern Aegean ( Psara, Kythera, Crete ).

Greuter is a member of numerous botanical societies, including the Linnean Society of London and the International Association for Plant Taxonomy. He is co-editor of the Flora of Southern Africa, the Flora de la República de Cuba and numerous botanical journals such as the Candollea or Willdenowia.
