Werner Mattle

Werner Mattle ( born November 6, 1949 in Oberriet ) is a former Swiss alpine skier. His greatest successes reach him in the giant slalom.

Raised in Arosa and starting for the Ski Club Arosa Mattle celebrated his first and greatest success in the World Cup, when he with start number 39 won the giant slalom in Adelboden January 24, 1972. Shortly thereafter, the at that time very successful Swiss Association nominated him for the Olympic Winter Games 1972 in Sapporo. There he won the bronze medal in the giant slalom, in which the victory at the Italian Gustav Thöni went. Since this contest that year was synonymous with the World Cup, Mattle won so the World Cup bronze medal. He also became Swiss champion in the giant slalom in 1972. His surprising World Cup victory could never repeat Mattle, even among the top ten, he managed later only twice, in tenth of the giant slalom in Pra Loup in March 1972 and then again until three years later than third in the giant slalom in Adelboden January 13, 1975.
