Werner Meinhof

Kurt Werner Meinhof Armin ( born October 20, 1901 in Halle, † February 7, 1940 in Jena ) was a German art historian. He led from 1936 to 1939 the City Museum in Jena.

Life

Werner Meinhof was the youngest of ten children of Pastor John Meinhof (1859-1947) and his wife Mathilde (1860-1908), a daughter of Julius Köstlins. He dropped out of school and became an art and locksmith. Later he took after the Abitur and studied in Hall Paul Frankl Art History. Like his brothers, he was a member of the German National People's Party.

1920 Meinhof participated in the suppression of workers' revolts in the region of Halle / Saale, for which he was awarded the Silver helpers characters. In 1926, he became engaged to the eight years younger Ingeborg Guthardt († 1949). He found a job as an art teacher in Halle, in 1926 received his doctorate with a thesis " Ostfälische carved altarpieces in the early 15th century " in art history and got a job as a sign of head teacher at a secondary school in Gdansk. In March 1928 he was a research assistant at the State Museum for Art and Cultural History in Oldenburg. On December 28, 1928, he married his fiancee, 1931, the daughter Wienke, born 1934, the daughter Ulrike.

No later than 1930, Meinhof member of the League of Struggle for German Culture. On 1 May 1933 he also joined the NSDAP (member number 2856334 ). In the same month, he stopped at an exhibition at the Museum Folkwang in Essen the opening speech, which received an honorable mention in the People's Observer. In 1936, Meinhof was director of the Jena City Museum and the NSDAP district office culture, in 1937, he lectured at the National Schools of architecture, visual arts and crafts Weimar.

As Jena museum director Meinhof taught in 1937 over 270 works of art for the Nazi Degenerate Art exhibition, including almost all of the graphic work of Ernst Ludwig Kirchner from the possession of the museum.

In September 1939, ill Werner Meinhof hard and died on February 7, 1940, from pancreatic cancer. Ingeborg Meinhof later lived together with Renate Riemeck that, as Ingeborg died in 1949, was awarded legal custody of their two daughters.
