Werner Neumann

Werner Neumann ( born January 21, 1905 in Königstein, Saxony, † April 24, 1991 in Leipzig ) was a German musicologist and Bach researchers. He founded in 1950 the Bach Archive in Leipzig.

Life and work

He studied from 1928 to 1930 at the Conservatory in Leipzig by Otto Weinreich, Fritz Reuter, Hermann Grabner and at the same time (until 1933 ) at the University of Leipzig with Theodor Kroyer, Hermann Zenck, Helmut Schultz ( musicology ), Theodor Litt, Hans Driesch (philosophy, psychology ), Walther von Wartburg, Philipp August Becker ( Romance Languages ​​), 1933 passed the state examination for Education in the Arts and in 1938 with the thesis " J. S. Bach's choral fugue. A contribution to the technique of composition Bach's " Dr. phil. doctorate.

1934 to 1940 he worked in the higher education service and then was called for five years of military service. 1945-1950 he worked as a freelance music teacher, music critic and writer on music, temporarily taught music history at the Musikhochschule Leipzig.

Following the German Bach Celebration 1950 he founded on 20 November 1950, the Bach Archive in Leipzig as a central documentation and research center, which was able to win under his leadership ( until 1973 ) an international reputation. The Bach Archive was opened on 23 June 1951, based in Gohliser castle.

1953 to 1974 he was with Alfred Dürr editor of the Bach - Jahrbuch, for which he wrote numerous articles. Since 1951 he worked as head of the East German Edition 86- volume " New Bach Edition " (Leipzig- Göttingen), to which he contributed a series of cantata volumes themselves.

As a board member of the New Bach Society (since 1952) and as its Honorary Member (since 1975) and member of the Johann- Sebastian -Bach - committee of the German Democratic Republic ( since 1966) he was able to participate varied on the organizational development of the modern Bach care.

Since 1971 he was a member of the Advisory Board Eterna Edition, conceptor and scientific advisor of the Bach series of gramophone records. In 1974 he was appointed as a full member of the Saxon Academy of Sciences.
