Werner Obschernikat

Obschernikat Werner ( born July 9, 1955 in Duisburg ) is a former German water polo player.

Werner's father Alfred Obschernikat was in the 1950s as a water polo player Olympian. Werner Obschernikat played for the Duisburg swimming club in 1898, with whom he was from 1980 to 1983 four times in a row, German Vice Champion.

The all-round player debuted in 1975 in the German national team and made ​​the leap into the team for the 1976 Olympics, the German team came in sixth. Then Obschernikat paused a few years in the national team, but returned back in 1980. In 1981 he was European champion in 1982 occupied the German team to third place at the World Championships. At the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, the German water polo players were among the favorites. By winning the bronze medal behind the Yugoslavs and the American hosts, they succeeded in the only Olympic medal win after 1945. After the World Cup victory in 1985, he joined again back from the national team. Before the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, the round players returned once in the team and was in Seoul to the team that finished fourth. Despite its two long breaks Werner Obschernikat graduated approximately 200 internationals.

Werner Obschernikat worked throughout his career with the Duisburg city works. Since 1997, he coached the water polo players of Bayer 05 Uerdingen.
