Werner Ostendorff

Werner East Dorff ( born August 15, 1903 in Königsberg ( Prussia); † May 1, 1945 in Bad Aussee) was a German officer, last SS-group leader and lieutenant general of the Waffen-SS during World War II.

Life

After training Werner East Dorff joined the Infantry Regiment 1 on 5 November 1925. East Dorff was a member of the NSDAP (member number 4691488 ) and since 1935 a member of the SS ( membership number 257 146 ).

He was promoted to lieutenant, and on July 1, 1933 Lieutenant for the Air Force Jiiterbog on 1 May 1930. On 1 March 1934, he joined the Air Force and came on 1 October 1935 as SS First Lieutenant in the SS Junker School Bad Tölz. On 30 January 1936 he was promoted to SS -Hauptsturmführer and teacher at the SS Junker School. He then took part in the battle for Russia in the Balkans campaign and as of June 1941. After the battles for Uschakowo at Smolensk on 13 September 1941, he was awarded the Knight's Cross. On 1 March 1942 he was promoted to SS - Standartenführer and awarded on June 5, 1942, the German Cross in Gold. As of July 1942, he was Chief of Staff of the newly formed SS - Panzer Corps and fought with him in the Battle of Kharkov. On April 20, 1943 promoted to SS chief officer, he took over on 26 November 1943, the leadership of the 17th SS Panzer Grenadier Division " Götz von Berlichingen " in France. On April 20, 1944, followed by transport to the SS Brigade Commander and Major General of the Waffen- SS. As of June 1944, he took part in the fighting in Normandy, where he was severely wounded at Carentan on June 16. On 1 December 1944 he was promoted to SS-group leader and lieutenant general of the Waffen-SS and Chief of Staff of Army Group Upper Rhine. As commander of the SS Panzer Division Das Reich ( 29 January to 9 March 1945) East Dorff was severely wounded on March 9, 1945 Székesfehérvár in Hungary by an incendiary grenade and died as a result of gas gangrene infection on 1 May 1945 in a military hospital in Bad Aussee
