Werner Riess

Werner Riess ( born August 8, 1970 in Altötting ) is a German historian.

Werner Riess studied after graduating from the King Charles Mann High School in Altötting 1990-1996 the subjects of history, German and Romance studies at the Universities of Augsburg and Tours. In 1996 he passed the First State Exam. He then studied at the University of Heidelberg, where he was from 1999 to 2003 also Research Associate at the Department of Ancient History and Epigraphy. In 2000 he was in Heidelberg with a supervised dissertation of Géza Alföldy to Apuleius and the robbers. A contribution to the historical crime research doctorate. The dissertation was awarded the Ruprecht- Karls- University of Heidelberg price.

In 2002 /03 he conducted research and taught with a Feodor Lynen Research Fellowship from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation at Emory University in Atlanta. From 2004 to 2007 Riess taught as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Classics of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from 2007 to 2011, he was an associate professor there. From 2007 to 2008 he spent a fellowship at the Center for Hellenic Studies in Washington, DC. 2008 he habilitated at the University of Augsburg with a supervised by Gregor Weber thesis on The Social Drama of Violence. A Cultural History of Interpersonal Violence in Fourth - Century BC Athens.

Since the winter semester 2011/2012 he teaches as a W2 - Professor of Ancient History at the University of Hamburg as the successor of Christoph. A professor at the Catholic University of Eichstätt on a W3 - Professorship of Ancient History 2012 has rejected Riess. Riess was appointed in 2012 in Hamburg W3 - Professor of Ancient History.

His research interests include the culture and mentality history of classical Athens, the social history of the Roman Empire, the Second Sophistic (especially Apuleius ) and forms of conflict, violence and crime in the Greco -Roman antiquity.
